What Is Counselling / Psychotherapy?
Two of the main differences between counselling and psychotherapy are the work’s depth and length.
While counselling deals with more immediate issues within a shorter period (between 6-24 sessions), psychotherapy involves a longer term, deeper exploration of the root cause, and this often involves a childhood trauma, abuse or anything else that could have had significantly affected the development of the psyche and its relationship with the world.
Counselling and psychotherapy very often overlap in the process of therapy.
How Does Therapy Work?
Therapy is a process of working with a trained mental health professional that help explore and address challenges and concerns in your life.
The specific approach and techniques used in therapy will depend on the therapist’s training and the needs of the individual seeking help.
Therapy can help address a wide range of issues, including mental health concerns, relationship problems, and coping with life transitions.
What Can I Expect During My First Therapy Session?
During your first therapy session, you will have the opportunity to discuss your reasons for seeking therapy and your goals for treatment. I will ask about your presenting issues, past and current stressors as well as history of experiences and relationships.
Honesty and openness during this session are important, as this will help me better understand your needs and develop an effective treatment plan.
Is Therapy Confidential?
Therapy sessions are confidential, meaning I may not disclose any information about you or your treatment without your consent. However, there are exceptions to this rule and I will discuss the limits of confidentiality with you during your first session.
How Do I Choose a Therapist?
Choosing a therapist is an important decision, and it can be helpful to research and ask friends or family members for recommendations. It is also important to find a therapist whom you feel comfortable with and who has the appropriate training and credentials.
Consider factors such as the therapist’s specialisation, experience, and approach. Having a phone consultation or a brief in-person meeting with the therapist is also a good idea before committing to ongoing therapeutic relationship.
What Is the Cost of Therapy?
My fee is £100. I accept payments by bank transfer. Discounts are available for students, NHS staff and clients on a low income.
Do You Offer a Free First Consultation?
Yes, I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to help you explore your needs and goals and determine if my services match your needs.
During this consultation, we can discuss your concerns and expectations for therapy and determine whether we would be a good match.
This consultation is confidential, and there is no obligation to commit to further therapy sessions. It is simply an opportunity for you to learn more about me and my approach and to ask any questions before making a decision to book the first session.
What Is the Length and a Frequency of Sessions?
The counselling sessions are usually 50 minutes long and occur once a week.
How Long Will Therapy Take?
The length of therapy will depend on your specific needs and goals. Some people may benefit from a few sessions, while others may need longer-term commitment.
It is generally best to be open to the process and allow the therapy to unfold naturally. I will work with you to determine the appropriate length of the treatment and make further adjustments as needed.
